When Kazakhstan came to be in 1991, they initially named the city Akmola (White Shrine). It was justified in many ways, primarily because of Almaty was so close to Kazakhstan’s international border, but also because of tectonic activities in the area and Almaty’s inability to expand. The move was greatly contested at the time, and still is, but it has by now been predominantly accepted.
As you can see by the images below, the city is incredibly beautiful. Outside of this week’s posts, we had previously done a photo piece on Astana’s Hazrat Sultan Mosque, the largest mosque in the region. Those that visit must absolutely visit the cities Palace of Peace and Reconciliation and The Astana Allee, two high profile tourists traps. There are also many beautiful lakes nearby, and a few national parks just a few hours ride.
